Billy Higgins is the production and technical guru of Annenberg Radio News. If you have a question about audio editing, field recording, or the radio booth mixing console, Higgins is your man. In 2003, he graduated from the USC, where he majored in Cinema and minored in Music Recording. He received his master's degree in Communication Management in summer 2010. He has been a part of the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism's Multimedia Technologies team since the end of 2005. Outside of USC, Higgins has been a part-time freelance assistant editor, production assistant, and script supervisor in Hollywood. He has also been a student intern at Lucasfilm's Industrial Light + Magic in the Bay Area and at Illingworth & Rodkin Acoustics in his hometown of Petaluma, CA. In addition to Annenberg Radio News, Higgins helps support Annenberg TV News, Impact, the Digital Lab and other technical operations at the Annenberg school. He also does work for USC Recreational Sports as webmaster for the USC Song Girls, Spirit Leaders and Traveler. On top of that, he is trying to create a feature film and does freelance editing and videography. In his free time, he sleeps.

Naturally, my time at ATVN prepared me for being a full time staff member at the USC Annenberg School and equipped me to start Annenberg Radio News as a day-of-air news operation. ATVN prepared me very well for the fast-paced and systematic world of broadcast news editing, and part of my job at USC Annenberg is to teach those techniques to current Journalism students. While an undergraduate student at the USC Cinema School, I already had a lot of experience with digital non-linear editing when I first came to ATVN my senior year at SC. However, I had no idea that editing for broadcast news is quite different than editing for episodic television or feature films. Fulfilling ATVN’s pressing deadlines taught me a lot about how to be quick and on-the-trigger with an Avid. It was an awesome experience and I recommend that EVERY USC student who is passionate about digital non-linear editing (whether you’re a film major, journalism major, or kinesiology major) take a shot at an ATVN editing shift. You’ll be a hero!
