Apple Sells 4 Million iPhones Over First 3 Days
Over four million iPhone 4S smartphones were sold during the first three days the phones were on the market, Apple announced Monday.
Analysts say the key to the smashing opening sales days was the company's widespread distribution strategy.
On launch day, October 14, the iPhone 4S was available from three carriers in the United States: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint. From 2007 to 2010, AT&T had been the sole carrier of earlier versions of the iPhone.
"iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend--the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days," said Philip Schiller, Apple senior VP of worldwide produce marketing.
The iPhone 4S flew off shelves, not only in the U.S., but in countries like Australia, Canada, France, Japan, and the UK.
One of the 4S's new features is an odd one: the ability to answer a variety of spoken questions. This feature is known as Siri and uses advanced voice-recognition technology.
Users who ask the new iPhone "what is the meaning of life", received a variety of lucid responses, including "all evidence to date suggests it's chocolate", Foxnews.com reported.
The new iPhone 4S retains the same design features as the iPhone 4, and ranges from $199 to $399 depending on the model.
