FBI Arrests Celebrity Phone Hacker [Update]
[Updated | Oct. 13, 12 p.m. PDT: In a CNN interview, Chistopher Chaney, the Florida man accused of hacking into the emails of nearly 50 Hollywood celebrities, said he was relieved to get caught.
"It started as curiosity, and turned into just being addicted to seeing behind the scenes of what was going on, with these people you see on the big screen," Chaney said. "I was almost relieved, a few months ago, when they came in and took away the computer."
Chaney said he did not sell any of the information or photos he obtained from hijacking the forwarding feature of the email accounts to celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Christina Aguilera. He says he is sorry for what he did.
"I deeply apologize. I know what I did was possibly one of the worst invasions of privacy a person could experience. I'm not trying to escape what I did, I know what I did and that it was wrong, and I just have to face that and go forward," said Chaney.
[UPDATE| 11:38 a.m. October 12: The FBI charged Chistopher Chaney, 35, of hacking into celebrities' computer and other devices, officials said in a press conference.
The suspect was indicted on charges of accessing protected computers without authorization, damaging protected computers without authorization, wiretapping and aggravated identity theft, officials said.
Authorities said Chaney used several aliases such as "ananygrrl," "trainreqsuckswhat," "jaxjaguars911." Chaney used public sources to find information about his female and male victims in Hollywood.
He allegedly illegally accessed the acounts of more than 50 people, authorities said.
According to the LA Times, FBI officials made an arrest in a Hollywood celebrity phone hacking investigation. The arrest comes just weeks after reports several celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson, reported that their cellphone accounts had been hacked.
FBI officials will release additional information about the investigation, dubbed "Operation Hackerazzi," Wednesday morning at a press conference.
According to law enforcement, allegations of celebrity phone hacking dates back to late 2010, well before Johansson and other celebrities reported their phones were breached.
The identity of other victims in the investigation have not been released. However, TMZ reports that hacker leaked private photos of young celebrities, including Johansson, Ali Larter, Jessica Alba and Emma Caulfield.
