Calif. Faces a $13 Billion Deficit in 2012

The shortfall is expected to cut funding from Calif. public schools and colleges.

California is projected to face a $13 billion budget shortfall in 2012, according to Calif.'s non-partisan budget analyst.

California's Legislative Analyst Office is expected to announce the official budget cut decision on Wednesday around 11:30 a.m.

The analyst's office predicts the state's tax revenue will fall short of the state's projections. The projected shortfall could trigger midyear cuts to programs such as public schools, colleges and health care programs across the state.

According to the LA Times, $100 million from the budgets of Cal State and University of California school systems along with more than $1 billion from of K-12 districts could be cut. Community colleges would increase tuition by $10 per unit. In response, these cuts could force state public schools to take off an entire week of school during the school year. However, districts would not be allowed to lay off teachers.

A report projects a $3.7 billion hole in the existing budget because of declining tax revenue. The $86 billion state budget is compiled of spending cuts, projected higher tax revenue and fee hikes.

Republican lawmakers warned that revenue projections were overly optimistic when the budget was passed in June.

The current budget requires a series of automatic cuts if the analyst or Governor Jerry Brown's Department of Finance predict revenue that is lower than expected when the budget is passed.
