Gil Cates Dies at 77

Gilbert Cates, who produced 14 Academy Awards shows, was found dead in a parking structure at UCLA.  He was 77.

Gilbert Cates, who produced 14 Academy Awards shows, was found dead in a parking structure at UCLA.  He was 77.

TMZ reports that Cates' body was discovered Monday night.  Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said the body of a man in his 70s was found in a parking structure at UCLA at 820 Westwood Place at 6:29 p.m. Monday.  He would not identify the man, pending notification of relatives.

Cates, who produced the Academy Awards most recently in 2008, was a dean at UCLA's School of Theater Film and Television.  His first year producing the show was in 1990.

Born Gilbert Katz in New York City, he produced the feature films "I Never Sang for My Father" (1970) and "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams" (1973), among others.
