Large Brawl Breaks Out at Carson High School
[UPDATE | 8:52 a.m. March 8th: Police are increasing security outside of Carson High School Thursday in anticipation of student and parent protests.]
A 30-person fight broke out at Carson High School Wednesday, leaving two students hospitalized and three other students in police custody, according to authorities.
The brawl took place at 10 a.m. on the campus quad during a nutrition break, said Monica Carazo of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The fight is said to have allegedly began as a reaction to a racial conflict. Although authorities have not verified if racial tension was the cause of the fight.
"We have no information that would lead us to believe there was something that's racially motivated, or something has been brewing that caused this fight to occur," said LAUSD Police Chief Steve Zipperman. "This is a very racially and culturally diverse school. It is very uncharacteristic for this campus to have a situation like this happen."
Five students have been issued citations in connection with starting the fight.
The school has been placed on modified lock down, which still permits students to go to lunch and use the bathrooms, according to Carazo.
The extent of the injuries sustained by the hospitalized students are currently unknown.
A representative for the school said that everybody is fine, and could not comment any further at the time.
School police, assisted by sheriff’s deputies, are currently investigating all aspects of the brawl.
