Student Arrested Planned to Kill Students, Teacher
It was a close call at a Sherman Oaks Catholic high school as a 16-year-old boy was discovered and arrested by police before carrying out his plan to shoot two other students and a teacher.
The Notre Dame High School student was overheard telling a friend his plan, and was thus reported to a parent who contacted authorities. The student confessed his plan while being questioned by police and was arrested on Friday.
According to Captain Paul Snell of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Station, the boy was depressed due to the recent death of his grandmother and was having medical issues.
While there was no weapon found on campus, police recovered a functioning World War II –era rifle that the boy intended to use.
“There are some indications that there may have been some grade issues with the teacher. It was a terrorist threat similar to other schools around the country,” Snell told the Daily News.
He added that the boy made allusions to the recent school shooting in Ohio, where a 17-year-old boy killed three other students.
“The student in question is no longer a student at Notre Dame," said Brett Lowart, President of Notre Dame High School said in an announcement to student and parents.
“The safety of our students was never in question. Given other tragic incidents that have occurred around the country, we are pleased that this has ended without anyone getting hurt,” said Lowart.
