Gould School of Law Rises in Rankings

Careful admission selection, academic support programs, and one-on-one attention is helping USC Law reach 6th in the nation for bar prep.

USC's Gould School of Law has been ranked sixth in the nation in bar exam preparation, according to the National Jurist, which analyzes the ration between LSAT scores of incoming students and their performances on their bar exam. This fairs well with USC students who are expected to take the exam in July.

It is the fourth year in a row that USC has the highest bar passage rate in California at 91 percent. Even the 9% of students who don't pass the first time have a great chance the second time around, says Professor and Vice Dean Scott Altman.

Altman attributes the school's success to careful admission selection, academic support programs and one-on-one time with advisors and professors.

"We are absolutely more selective than we were 10 and 15 years ago and the number of outstanding students applying to the law school at USC is better now than it was 10 or 15 years ago," says Altman.

Current students, like first year law student Paul Daagostino, believe USC's success stems from their practical approach to law rather than solely academic based studying like other top schools.

The Gould School of Law academic support programs determine students who are struggling and offer them additional sessions to work on skills like writing and memorizing law quickly. All students are offered counseling for deciding which courses to take.

After school, many of the USC law grads stay in California and pursue diverse jobs in the field, according to Altman. Alumni practice everything from family to corporate law.

Vice Dean Altman suspects that the academic support program instilled 8 years ago will continue to create success for its students and their future careers.
