LA Advocates Voice Disapproval of Jail Expansion

Activists came out and protested a controversial plan to move prisoners from L.A. County.

Two community activist groups spoke out Tuesday morning in Downtown L.A. against moving 512 long-term L.A. County inmates to Kern County.

The Californians United for a Responsible Budget and the L.A. No More Jails Coalition protested a contract that would move the prisoners to the Taft Community Correctional Facility instead of investing in alternative imprisonment in the Los Angeles community.

The Taft Community Correctional facility closed last November but would be reopened for the transferred prisoners.

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors said that moving the long-term prisoners will leave more space so other prisoners can serve more of their sentences.

In addition to fiscal concerns, opponents also raised concerns about moving inmates more than 100 miles from their homes and families in Los Angeles.
