Million Dollar Settlement Reached in Priest Abuse Case

The Archdiocese reached a settlement with 17 victims.

The Los Angeles Archdiocese announced Wednesday that it had reached a $13 million settlement with 17 victims of sexual abuse.

This case involved the alleged acts of Father Nicolas Aguilar-Rivera, a visiting cleric from Mexico. Eleven of the victims, all boys ages 7-12 at the time of the incident, will receive about $1 million.

The other six victims, who claim they were molested by other priests, will receive shares of the remaining $2 million.

Twelve years after lawsuits surfaced accusing members of the Catholic clergy in Los Angeles of sexual abuse, this settlement marks more than $740 million that the L.A. Archdiocese has spent on litigation costs.
