Officials Seek Input for City-Wide Wifi Service
Los Angeles city officials took the first steps in launching a plan to install citywide internet access Monday.
The project hopes to provide internet access for those who cannot afford or otherwide do not currently have it.
Councilman Blumenfield envisions the internet being used for more than simply browsing the web. He believes that benefits of widespread access could include reduced traffic and thriving business.
The project would provide nearly 30 percent of people in the city currently living without internet access with an easily-accessible connection.
Although city officials recognize the complexity of the endeavor, they believe that 90% of the city should be able to access the internet from anywhere within the next five years if all plans proceed smoothly.
An initiative similar to this was attempted in 2007, but ultimately failed because of cost issues. However, Councilman Blumenfield does not foresee the problem occurring again.
City officials have said the project will be funded without increasing taxes or extracting money from other public services.
