Lakers Begin Search for New Coach

The Los Angeles Lakers begin their search for Mike D'Antoni's successor.

The Lakers are starting an extensive search for the next head coach of the storied franchise after former coach Mike D'Antoni stepped down Wednesday evening.

Mike D'Antoni's resignation came after the Lakers posted a 27-55 record, which was the sixth worst in the NBA this season.

Former Laker Mychal Thompson was on the radio show "ESPN L.A. Now" with Mark Willard to give his thoughts on the issue stating that either former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Byron Scott or Oklahoma City point guard Derek Fisher should step up to the plate.

"Who could hand in a better resume then Byron Scott?" said Thompson. "Byron is a proven commodity, he has taken the New Jersey Nets to the finals twice, so the man knows what he's doing." When asked about how Fisher would fit into the picture Thompson replied, "If the Lakers want to go out on a limb and hire Derek Fisher, I would love for him to be the next head coach."

Many names have been mentioned for the vacant head coaching position. The candidates range from established NBA coaches such as Jeff Van Gundy, Stan Vangundy and Lionel Hollins to lesser known candidates like current CSKA Moscow coach and two time Euroleague Coach of the Year, Ettore Messina.
