Survey

Where did you work before, and what jobs did you do?:

After I graduated USC, I worked as a multimedia journalist at KGET 17 (NBC) in Bakersfield, CA where I wrote, shot and edited my daily news stories.

What new skills do you think journalists need? :

Journalists have to have thick skin, good instincts, passion and willingness to learn a wide array of stories.

What are the top three skills journalism students should learn in college?:

It's essential for journalism students to learn how to ask compelling questions, write and edit quickly and put together a strong resume tape.

What were your duties at ATVN? :

MMJ, Reporter, Web writer, News Anchor

How did ATVN prepare you for your career?:

ATVN prepared me a great deal with working under intense deadline pressure and being able to set-up stories on my own and make it all happen in crazy traffic!

What should graduates keep in mind when negotiating their first job?:

Be flexible and open-minded while still letting news directors know all the many skills you bring to the table as a young go-getter who learned the ins and outs of the business in the 2nd largest news market.

How frequently do you post material on the Web throughout the day? What kind of content do you post (including articles, photos, slide shows, videos, blog entries, links, etc.)? :

I tweet and post pictures and links of my stories on Facebook and Instagram almost every day

Which software programs do you use at your current job? including newsroom software/editing software/content management system:

We use iNews just like ATVN and Avid :)

How do you use social media skills on the job?:

How important are bilingual skills in your profession?:

It's ALWAYS great to learn another language, especially, Spanish, which is pretty essential for LA too. But any language you learn will help you to better connect with some potential interviewee who speaks it, and it will set you apart from other reporters, who only speak English.

What types of stories do you cover? general assignment, enterprise, business, health, etc.:

The full gamut falls under "general assignment," so I cover anything from court to crime to weather, politics, education and the occasional feature story.

What are the most common news stories in your market? :

Weather-related stories, such as tornadoes and the uneventful snow storm, and political stories run regularly since OKC is the capital city.
