My Goals as a Producer
Being a producer here at ATVN has been such an amazing and humbling experience. Each week I produced, I tried my best to accomplish a goal I had for myself to become a better producer. Although I still need a lot of work on some characteristics, I feel I've made good progress compared to the beginning of the semester.
One of my main struggles was being decisive as a producer. There were many mornings when the lead story of the day wasn't as obvious as some days. This really tested my news judgment, but I always made sure to keep in mind that ATVN is a local, USC-based newscast. Talking with my teammates and supervisors during the morning meetings really helped me to improve my news judgment, and I learned producing a newscast is a huge team effort. I loved working with my teammates because their confidence helped me solidify my decisions. In this way, I think I've gotten better at communicating to MJ's what I exactly want in a story.
I'm not an outspoken person, which is to my disadvantage because it's so important to be loud and heard in the newsroom. I'm still working on this characteristic and it's been a personal struggle was well. I'm not used to thinking out loud so my goal was to make sure I researched stories to prepare to talk about them. I can't say I've accomplished this, but I feel I have made small improvements week by week. Next Thursday will be my last time being video teammate. I'm sad and surprised at how quickly this semester went by. I wish I had more time to improve and get better, but I hope next week, I can cross off these two goals on my checklist.
