The Value of Producing
Learning how to produce this semester has taught me far more than I ever expected. Not only did I learn how to create a rundown and develop a 30-minute newscast, but I also learned how to keep track of multiple moving parts all at the same time, which I know will benefit me in any job down the road.
Producers have to manage a lot of different people, a lot of different stories, and a lot of different situations. Initially, producing can feel extremely overwhelming, but the second you learn how to manage all the moving parts anything feels possible. The trick is to stay calm and not to let anything out of your control.
As controlling as this may sound, I think it’s important no matter what you do in life. It’s always important to look at any situation and know that you can overcome it along as you take control and find a way to work through all the different parts of whatever it is your doing.
Producing is something that I thoroughly enjoy. I love the idea of creating something out of nothing and being a part of every step along the way. As odd as it may sound, I also enjoy the bumps in the road that come with producing when a story doesn’t go as planned because it forces you to figure out how to deal with the situation and find a way to make it better.
No matter what job you do something is always going to go wrong, but it’s all about how you adapt to it. It’s about how you can take whatever situation you have in front of you and make it better. This is something I learned while producing that I’ll take with me my entire life no matter what job I have because at the end of the day the show will always go on so it’s your job to push through and make it happen.
Although, I don’t think I’ll ever go into day-of-air producing, I do know that in one way or another I’ll be producing no matter what.
