Lessons For A Lifetime

I can still remember my first day at ATVN. I, like every other freshman, was excited to be in a new environment and so thrilled to have the opportunity to pursue my future career at USC. I signed up for ATVN the second spots opened up and showed up early to my first shift. As soon as I walked through the door I was thrown into a learning experience that has lasted my entire four years at USC.

It's amazing to think of how many hours I have spent at ATVN and how I used to idolize the producers. Everything I know about broadcast journalism can pretty much be traced back to my student teachers and the ATVN faculty.

It is a weird feeling to find yourself suddenly in the shoes of people you used to aspire to be. It is even stranger to realize that the people who you thought knew everything were still learning when they were teaching you.

My last year at ATVN and at USC is coming to a close, but I could not be happier with the knowledge I have gained through JOUR403 and the experience I have had being a day-of-air producer.

Here are just some of the things that have stood out to me this semester:

  • I've learned that patience is key when teaching others how to produce the best quality of work.
  • I've learned that even when you rely on others to get something done you cannot assume that your job is over.
  • I've learned that it's okay to ask for help even if you are the person who is supposed to have the answers.
  • I've learned how to identify the future ATVN all-stars and I have become more grateful of the alumni that encouraged me when I was in a similar position.

The most important thing I have learned through this experience is that even as a senior you are never done learning. When I graduate in just under a month I know that these lessons will follow me beyond ATVN, and I look forward to continue to keep learning even after I am gone. I am also so proud and excited for the next generation of ATVN leaders to learn what it feels like to finally reach the top of the ladder that is ATVN and get to continue to teach and inspire students that will follow in their footsteps.
