Producers

There's No Such Thing As Too Much Communication

My Tuesday team has been producing for over a month now and during this period I’ve learned just how vital communication is to the show running smoothly. Part of my job as the web and graphics producer for the week was to put in requests for all of the graphics that would be appearing in the show. This requires more than just looking at the rundown and seeing what stories call for an over-the-shoulder or a full screen.

It’s important that you actually verbally communicate with the lead producer to make sure you’re both on the same page concerning what the graphic will contain. This was especially true this past Tuesday. Our show contained a lot of full screens and with full screens one has to make sure that what’s shown on the screen matches what’s written in the script. Since our show had a lot of official statements this meant that I was constantly reporting back to my lead producer and asking her to highlight exactly what part she would want shown in the graphic.

Communicating with the art director is even just as important. At times the image I have in my head of how I want a graphic to look doesn’t translate well onto the graphic request form. When moments like this happen I just pull aside my art director Jerome and explain to him exactly how I would like for the graphic to look.  Being able to communicate like that really eases the process of graphic building. It’s important to be 100 percent clear when you’re requesting things to be a certain way and it’s impossible to do that if you don’t have good communication.
