Tuesday Night LIVE

From the audience’s point of view at times it can seem dull watching a newscast and seeing the same anchors in the same studio setting. Live shots help to take away from the dullness by adding an element of excitement to the show. A live shot makes the experience of watching the news more interactive for the viewer. It gives the viewer the experience of actually being at the scene of the story in real-time. I feel viewers enjoy breaking news and live shots give off that same sense of urgency that breaking news does.

One can’t just simply rely on the live shot aspect to be enough to interest the viewer. There also needs to be compelling visuals to go with it. It’s important that you actually have something to show to the viewer. I think the best stories for live shots are events. When you do a live shot covering an event the viewer actually feels as if they’re there themselves. For example doing a live shot at the Conquest concert at SC Thursday would definitely be of interest to our viewers. You would get great nat sound of the performances and great visuals of the large crowd.

This week’s show didn’t have a live shot but we could have done one for our story on the USC vs UCLA game. UCLA requested that USC not follow their 41 year-old tradition of the drum major stabbing the field. A nice element would have been to do a live shot at USC’s band practice that way viewers could see what the field stabbing action looks like. Although we weren’t able to do a live shot the story was still covered exceptionally well. I hope to find more opportunities this year to do live shots.
