A Minor Goal that Makes a Big Difference
One of my goals at this midterm point is to ensure that no CG is missing throughout the entire news cast. Though this may seem minor, it is of major importance to a story and to the audience.
To me, a CG provides credibility for the story--it tells me why the person speaking on camera is important or relevant to that specific story. Without CGs, the story loses some of its significance for the viewers.
I began working on this midterm goal during Monday's news production. By 4 o'clock, I started making a list of all the stories that were lacking times and CGs--that gave me two full hours to constantly pester my news team about it. (I think I asked about every 15 minutes whether each person who was working on a story had put their CGs in). I put a little line next to each story that was missing their CGs so I could check them off as they were completed. At the end of the day, right before we went on air, I was the last producer in the news room, waiting to put those last few "checks" next to each story. Every story was finally complete by about 5:58 P.M.--right on time!
Though this little task seems insignificant in the big picture of production, it can make or break a news cast. Again, without CGs, there is no credibility behind the interviews throughout the news cast. If there is no credibility, the show really wouldn't have any importance to viewers. Therefore, after the show was done and no CG went unnoticed, I walked out of the news room smiling, knowing I had fulfilled my goal.
