How to Shine
All producers deserve the chance to show off their creativity and make their mark in a newscast. Everyone needs a place to shine to avoid burnout. Personally, two important focuses are teases and special segments that are designed to differentiate our coverage from competitors. Writing strong teases and showcasing stories in interesting and engaging ways with your anchors and audience creates vision. It's important to have the teases vary and to find interesting ways to start the teases off so that the audience is already sucked in. Most newscasts look the same and are produced nearly the same way each time. However, if our show looks different and our teases force viewers to stay tuned, then producers are making a successful newscast.
As a producer, I have really learned the importance of getting to know an audience. It is vital to understand the audience's interests and to then come up with compelling stories for the newscast. These stories should involve the use of natural sound, interesting facts, as well as provide a place for the anchor's personalities to come out and relate to the audience. Tuesday's anchors, Kevin and Ryan, do a great job including humor and positive energy into the newscast to create professional, yet memorable moments.
It is also essential to include a variety of shots in a successful newscast. Team Tuesday did an exceptional job doing this in our most recent newscast. We had our anchor report a story from the monitor, a reporter stand in front of the wall, and then another reporter do a live shot. Including a variety of shots allows for a more diverse and interesting show. Viewers will get bored watching each story be the same as the previous one. Our goal is to not lose viewers and to entertain our audience.
Producers are leaders of the team and it is our job to help others grow as writers and storytellers. It is our responsibility to help the anchors make the most of each newscast as well as maintain a strong audience.
