Teasing with Tweets

Typically, my role as a producer on Team Thursday is to make sure that all of the teases we use at the beginning and during the show have eye-catching video, interesting sound bites, or both.

But this week, as the Web/Graphics Producer, I teased our newscast not through video but rather via social media.

The Web/Graphics Producer is the first person to try and entice an audience to turn on ATVN at 6p.m. that evening. So, it was my job to utilize Facebook and Twitter several times throughout the day to promote the stories our news team was working hard on.

The key to teasing a show using social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook is to promote the most buzz-worthy news that we will feature in our newscast. In this situation, we don't have to worry about the quality of video or sound, just making the story sound interesting enough for people to turn on our newscast. More importantly, these Twitter and Facebook teases must appeal to our student audience.

Additionally, in an ideal world, we want to tease newsworthy stories from at least two of the three blocks of our show. We want viewers to stick around the entire newscast to see these stories on air.

But we must be careful what stories we do tease. We will only tease a story that we know will definitely not be floated from the rundown, like a package. Because once we tell our audience that we are featuring a story in our newscast later that night, we have made a commitment to keep that story.

Below is a social media tease I tweeted on Thursday. I tweeted this tease about four hours before our broadcast went live. I teased two package stories that I knew would air during two different news blocks. I didn't provide our audience will all of the news, but I gave enough information to spark their interest. Hopefully, once they read that tweet, they wanted to turn on our newscast to find out more information.

Hopefully my recruiting efforts through social media teases enticed at least one more person to turn on our show.
