A Fair and Balanced Election
Samantha from Sex and the City once said: "I don't believe in the Republican Party or the Democrat Party. I just believe in parties." You may wonder why I am quoting Samantha...or Sex and the City for that matter. However, this is relevant to ATVN's coverage of the election because I found that in reporting such a monumental event in history, we had to have to the same disregard for party affiliations as Samantha did in order to preserve an unbiased balance of information. And yeah, we like to have a good time while doing so.
I was live shot producing on election night with Emily Shapiro and while it was one of my more stressful experiences at ATVN, it was absolutely thrilling. In organizing and coordinating live shots from the field, one of the greatest challenges was setting up one shot while preparing the next - while more than twenty reporters and producers were trying to get hold of me. Emily and I were doing our very best to give everyone a chance to report from their location, but as I mentioned earlier we had to constantly remind ourselves to consider the party affiliations of each live shot in order to make sure that each party's voice was heard.
In regards to my day-of-air experience on Wednesday, my main priority as the video teammate was to make sure that all election-related video was ordered. Because it was the day after the election, there was a lot of video that I needed to order from Tuesday night in regards to results, acceptance speeches and concession speeches. Furthermore, I made sure to keep an eye out for new video coming in.
Despite the fact that nearly everyone covering the election experienced a minor panic attack at some point, I think it's safe to say that the majority of us felt truly inspired to be a part of such an incredible moment in history. I for one, feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to produce during such an exciting event.
And now that it's over, whether our candidate of choice won or lost, I think Samantha would want us to unite in celebration of a job well done.
