To Produce or Not to Produce?
JOUR 403 has helped me tailor my goals both academically and professionally. Junior year, I was dead set on taking the reporting elective this semester, as I saw my Broadcast and Digital Journalism major as a gateway to on-camera reporting. After studying abroad in London and interning at a start-up company where I delved into web journalism, I took a closer look at my academic plan and decided to take producing this fall.
Learning how to produce at ATVN has helped me realize that I should pursue a career that allows me to combine my writing, editing and leadership skills. While I do enjoy packaging stories, I like looking at the big picture of a news show rather than focusing on one aspect.
I am still deciding what I want to do after graduation, but producing is definitely in the cards. I enjoy the managerial aspect of producing – being responsible for the show while delegating tasks brings the perfect equation of workplace stress that motivates me and keeps my day interesting. I truly love producing and love JOUR 403. Right now I am interested in learning about different producing careers; I'm only familiar with the small market route, and I would like to investigate other options, such as production assistant jobs at the network level.
In the long run, I want to work in health journalism. I am passionate about wellness, both mentally and physically, and I am typically drawn to health news stories. I picture myself working for a news organization, whether it's a magazine, television station or website, that focuses on health.
My key takeaways from this class are that no matter what I do after graduation, I know I want to work in a fast-paced environment where I can utilize my communication and leadership skills. Wish me luck on the job search!
