Preparation Is Key

After two weeks of experiencing the process it takes to put together a full thirty-minute newscast for ATVN, I'm vey excited about the growth of the entire news team. During the first week, we all seemed a bit ambivalent about how we would accomplish our goal, especially with two producers having class the morning of our show. 

I was one of the producers that was in class, and I must say, having to adjust from the classroom to the newsroom is pretty tough. Despite the fact that we are examining concepts that are relevant to the newsroom during class, it's a totally different atmosphere. People are consistently calling on you to lead them or help them, and you have to make sure that you're on top of everything.

As for myelf, I was in charge of the graphics and ordering the CNN video clips, so I made it a priority of mine to keep in close contact with the lead producer and make sure that all the video she wanted was ordered, and that every graphic that the newscast needed was requested. 

Communication was the most important aspect in what made our first show come together. It really made the difference, whether it was updating each other when something was needed, or when a story had to be copy edited. 

My main takeaway was that I needed to come in prepared and that I must maintain a positive and willing attitude throughout the day. It's important to know the stories of the day, as well as pitch them during that morning meeting. It also takes a lot of effort to put together a show given the time constraints that come with being a student. Everyone has their own commitments and prior agendas, so it's cool to see us all put that aside for one cause.

More than anything I want to continue growing as a producer, and not be afraid to take on the strenuous tasks that come with being the lead, video, or graphics producer. I'm excited moving forward, and will enjoy this wild ride.
