Make Quick And Sound Decisions
It is very common that initial plans don't pan out in a newscast. Yesterday was my first time as lead producer, and being in charge of that position brings lots of pressure. I'm responsible for making quick and sound decisions, as well as leading other individuals that have specific tasks.
There were many moments in which I had to revert to Plan B. The first instance happened when I found out that I would be short-staffed for the entire day. One multimedia journalist called in sick and we were short a reporter. The night before I planned to send specific individuals out to work on specific stories, once I realized I would be short-staffed, I had to adjust my plans accordingly. I quickly had to decide which stories were most important, as being short on staff forces you to do so.
I had to make another quick decision the morning of our show. I had sent out one of our multimedia journalists to get elements on a big story that we wanted to cover, but when she got to the location, there was nothing going on and the event had ended.
I then instructed her to go elsewhere and get started on another story. Prior to me sending her out, we discussed that in the event that nothing was going on for the initial story, then she would act on Plan B.
Throughout the day it is important to adjust to times of crisis. Sometimes things may not go according to what you planned but if you can react to that with a quick and sound decision then the day will continue smoothly.
