Thousands of riders expected for CicLavia

The 2nd anual CicLavia is giving Los Angeles seven miles of car-free streets this Sunday

More than seven miles of L.A.’s streets will be shut down to vehicles this Sunday for the second annual CicLavia.

The event closes off streets to motorists to allow bicyclists and pedestrians a safe space to enjoy the surrounding neighborhood. The idea to shut down congested roadways originally started in Columbia and was first held in Los Angeles last year.

The route stretches from Boyle Heights includes downtown Los Angeles, MacArthur Park and East Hollywood.

"CycLavia transforms our car congested city streets into walkable, bikeable open space," Andrea Alarcon, public works commissioner said.

"Seeing a five year old kid raising his bike for the first time... but in the streets of Downtown Los Angles, that's just not something you see everyday," Alarcon said.

"It's a great event for bikes but you don't have to have a bike, you can come out and have a stroll, stop at a restaurant to have a bite to eat and see the masses of people on the route which is really inspiring thing to see," Bobby Gadda, CicLavia co-founder said. "It's a different version of the city""
