Newborn Tiger Dies at the L.A. Zoo
A tiger cub has died at the Los Angeles Zoo, authorities reported Wednesday. The Zoo staff found the endangered Sumatran cub dead on Monday while performing their preliminary checks.
Veterinarians conducted a necropsy that indicated the tiger suffered from head trauma. They are unsure as to what caused the head injury.
Zoo-goers never saw the cub; they are kept in privacy because they are too young to comfortably navigate the outside tiger habitat. Keeping young animals in seclusion is just one of the saftety precautions the L.A. Zoo takes to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of its animals, Zoo officials said.
The Sumatran cub, one of three born on August 6, is the only one of Lulu's litter to die. Lulu has previously raised five cubs.
"While the loss of this cub is unfortunate, we plan to continue to share the growth of the two cubs with our community until they are introduced to their exhibit," Los Angeles Zoo Director John Lewis said in a statement.
