Feds Gift California Colleges $37 Million
While many community colleges are having to cut courses due to tightening budgets, some California schools received good news.
The Federal government will award thirty-four California community colleges with grants totalling nearly $37 million for the improvement of science, engineering and math departments, California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott announced Friday.
The grants range from about $840,000 to $1.2 million each, and are designated specifically for the enrichment of the schools' science facilities and curriculum. The money could be used to build labs, develop courses, and update equipment.
The schools that received the grants all have large numbers of Latino students.
"The funds will help Hispanic students achieve their educational goals," Scott said.
Scott added the grants are part of a long-term goal of building a workforce of highly skilled individuals who can strengthen the local economy and compete globally.
