Santa Monica Dog Owners Campaign For Off-Leash Beaches
The Santa Monica City Council will consider establishing an off-leash dog zone on the beach at a meeting Tuesday. The idea was promoted by Unleash the Beach, a Los Angeles based group that campaigns for more space on the sand for dogs.
Supporters face a tough battle. California code prohibits unleashed dogs on the beach without approval from a California State Parks superintendent.
The agency has already vowed to oppose efforts to relax the rules, citing safety, cleanliness, and environmental concerns.
Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach is the only beach in Los Angeles County where dogs can legally run off-leash.
