Terror Plot to Kill Ambassador Foiled, 2 Arrested [Updated]
Saudi Arabia has released a statement Tuesday thanking the U.S. for their efforts in foiling an attempted assasination of the Saudi Arabian ambassador in the U.S.
"The attempted plot is a despicable violation of international norms, standards, and conventions and is not in accord with the principles of humanity," said the Saudi's statement.
The two people in connection with an attempted terror plot to kill the Saudi Arabian ambassador in the U.S. have been arrested.
"Manssor Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri are charged with conspiracy to murder a foreign official, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, and conspiracy to commit an act of international terrorism, among other charges,"attorney general Eric Holder said at a press conference held Tuesday morning.
Holder went on to say that Arbabsiar met with a confidential informant from the Drug Enforcement Administration in May in Mexico. It resulted in "an international conspiracy by elements of the Iranian government to pay the informant $1.5 million to murder the Ambassador on U.S. soil."
"Those discussions led Arbabsiar - with Shakuri's approval - to facilitate the wiring of approximately $100,000 into a bank account in the United States as a down payment for the attempted assassination," Holder said.
According to a criminal complaint, Arbabsiar is a naturalized U.S. citizen who holds an Iranian passport. He has confessed to his participation in the plot as well as provided other information about the involvement of the Iranian government.
