Monday to be Busiest Travel Day for LAX
Officials at LAX expect to have its busiest travel day of the year Monday, estimating 167,000 travelers will pass through the airport.
Thanksgiving week, from Nov. 21 to Nov. 28, marks one of busiest holiday travel seasons, in which 1.78 million people were expected to fly through LAX. This figure is a 16 percent increase from last year's 153 million, but still less than the number of people who traveled before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Despite popular belief, the Monday after, not the day before, Thanksgiving is expected to have the highest travel volume of the year. The most crowded times are predicted to be from 6-9 a.m., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 7-10 p.m.
Travel experts say a change in travel patterns have shifted the airport's busiest travel days. People are now choosing to fly on Thanksgiving and get that cheaper ticket instead of flying the night before.
LAX is the sixth busiest airport in the world and the third in the U.S. Each week, the airport gives 565 daily flights to 81 domestic cities and over 1,000 weekly nonstop flight to 65 internationl destinations on over 75 carriers.
