Winter Shelters to Open for Thousands of Homeless
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority will begin the 2011-2012 Winter Shelter Program Thursday, providing shelter for homeless individuals and families throughout Los Angeles County.
The program will run until March 14 and provide 1,498 beds at 16 locations throughout the Southland. The winter program is funded by the City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, and the California National Guard.
The LAHSA contracts with local nonprofit service providers, such as: Grace Resource Center, New Image Emergency Shelter, East San Gabriel Valley Coalition, Long Beach Rescue Mission, First To Serve, MJB Recovery, Pomona Neighborhood Center, The Salvation Army Bell Shelter, LAMP Community Inc., and the Santa Clarita Community Development Corporation to provide temporary overnight shelter, food, and supportive resources.
Occupancy at the shelters is on a first-come, first-served basis for single individuals and families can contact 2-1-1 to be referred to regional service providers that offer housing assistance and other supportive services.
