Swimmer Breaks School Record at Pac-12 Championships

Senior All-American Katinka Hosszu breaks her record in 200y free relay.

Day one of the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships opened with a bang for the Trojans when senior Katinka Hosszu broke her own school record for the 200y free in her lead-off leg of the 800y free relay. Wednesday night, Hosszu broke her previous record (1:44.06) by almost an entire second, coming in at 1:43.19.

Junior Haley Anderson, senior Amanda Smith, and sophomore Lynette Lim made up the rest of the relay, which took third, three seconds behind Stanford and four seconds behind Cal, finishing in 7:01.76, a season best.

Hosszu hails from Bafa, Hungary, where she was an eight-year Hungarian National Team swimmer.  In her four seasons at USC, she has been a force to be reckoned with in the Pac-12 and the NCAA- breaking records, capturing titles, and attracting international attention.

Hosszu has been nominated for ESPN's ESPY award for Best Female College Athlete and was the 2011 Swimmer of the Meet at the NCAA Championships. The USC co-captain is a three-time NCAA title winner, world championship gold medalist, and a repeat All-American. She holds USC swimming records for the 200y IM, 200y Fly, 400y IM, and 200 free.

As of Wednesday night, the USC women were tied for third with Arizona and Arizona State, only 24 points behind the leader. Cal is leading the Championships early with 128 points, while Stanford is in second with 112. The Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, WA continue through Saturday, with preliminary races beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
