LA Ranks High on Bed Bug List

Orkin, a pest control company, ranks Los Angeles the 5th highest city for bed bug treatments.

Los Angeles climbed up 20 spots to being fifth in the nation for total number of bed bug incidents, according to major pest control company Orkin.

The company released a list on Tuesday of the top 50 U.S. cities with the highest number of bed bug treatments completed in 2011. Overall, bed bug incidents have soared 33.6 percent from the previous year.

The top five cities affected by bed bugs, in order, are Cincinnati, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, and Los Angeles. Some cities, such as New York, saw a decrease in total number of bed bug incidents.

Ron Harrison, Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director, noted that "the changes in some cities' rankings show bed bugs continue to be a problem in most areas of the U.S."

As to why some cities have a greater problem than others, Harrison speculated "several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity."
