Hillary Clinton Organizes Earhart Recovery Expedition

Hillary Clinton takes action to find the missing plane of pilot Amelia Earhart

In 1937, on a historic journey around the world, Amelia Earhart disappeared without a trace.

Now, almost 75 years later, new clues are putting the search for Earhart’s missing aircraft back in action.

Historians and scientists from The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday to establish a plan of action.

Earhart is believed to have made an emergency landing on Nikumaroro, an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean, where she may have survived for weeks.

New photographs have caused government officials to believe that a wheel and strut from Earhart’s plane “Electra” is protruding from the water near the shoreline.

Robert Ballard, oceanographer and advisor for the expedition, stated that this is a substantial advance in the search or Earhart’s plane.

Still, with advancements in both technology and information, ballard believes the case is now much more manageable.

TIGHAR’s director Ric Gillespie is organizing a team to disembark from Honolulu on July 2, the 75th anniversary of Earhart’s disappearance.

Gillespie explained that the crew will be using a side scan sonar system on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle to survey the ocean floor and sounding areas.

When needed, TIGHAR's director stated they will also “investigate suspicious-looking targets using a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) with dual manipulators and color video camera system and lights.”

Clinton hopes to remind Americans of Earhart’s bravery and determination in her legendary expedition, which is being made into a documentary by Discovery Channel.

"Amelia Earhart's legacy still lives today, reminding young people to keep their eyes on the stars," Clinton said when announcing her Earhart-search revival Tuesday.
