Increased Reward for Identifying Shooting Suspect
The city of Los Angeles announced Tuesday that it will be offering a $75,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible for the slaying of two USC graduate students near the USC campus.
This reward increases the total reward money from the previous $125,000 offered through the university to a total of $200,000, official in Councilman Bernard Parks' office said Tuesday.
The $75,000 was secured and prepared to be announced by Parks' office Tuesday.
The parents and family members of both Ming Qu and Ying Wu, the two Viterbi electrical engineering students who were killed, met with LAPD detectives and viewed the crime sceme after flying in from China over the weekend.
The shooting took place on the 2700 block of Raymond Avenue in the West Adams area Wednesday morning. The motive remains unclear, but police say it may be a bungled carjacking.
The LAPD has viewed surveillance tapes in search of a dark colored car leaving the scene of the crime around the time of the shootings. According to LAPD Deputy Chief Pat Gannon, they have come up with a list of 75 different vehicles matching the description.
"I know we are all deeply saddened by these students' tragic deaths, and this will be an opportunity to come together and pay tribute to their lives, as well as their many accomplishments. It will also be an opportunity to mourn their passing as a community," said USC President Max Nikias in a letter to USC faculty, staff, and students Tuesday.
A memorial service organized by the university will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in honor of the two students. The service is open to the public and President Nikias encourages all students to attend. Doors open at 5:20 p.m.
