Study: UC Schools Providing 'Too-Liberal' Curriculum
The University of California curriculum is under fire after a recent study is suggesting politization in classes and campus events.
According to a report by a conservative organization of educators, UC schools are a hotbed for "left-leaning" faculty and "politically correct" thinking. This one-sided education hinders students from a well-rounded education, according to researchers.
The study conducted by the California Association of Scholars says that specifically, the UC humanities department has been hijacked by an overwhelmingly liberal academia with a leftist agenda.
The report, "Crisis of Competence: The Corrupting Effect of Political Activism in the University of California" advises UC regents to re-establish balance to the faculty. Authors of the study push for the UC system to encourage a broad spectrum of ideas and beliefs.
UC officials disagree, while some students and teachers are also unsatisfied with this research claim. They explain that schools like UC Berkeley offer a wide variety of courses to all types of students.
The data from the study analyzed graduation requirements, course descriptions, and class reading lists. It also referred to research done by others on the voter registration patterns of UC faculty and UC student test results on knowledge and writing skills.
The University of California schools are not the only system under scrutiny. The people behind the study say similar patterns have been observed at other higher education institutions across the country.
