Launchfest Singer Aims to Spread Joy
Lead Singer Mac Montgomery cringes at the label "Christian music". His band, Fmly Bnd, makes music that has a religious meaning for him, but he wants listeners to interpret it for themselves.
"I don't like to label it as any kind of religiosity, it's just fun and child-like, and people can depict what they want from it," Montgomery said.
The band's sound certainly isn't what many would consider "typical Christian." Montgomery describes it as indie-disco-eighties-trash-pop. How does he create that? He said he uses synthesizers, fuzzy bass, electric guitar, and lots of reverb.
Montgomery and his band, Fmly Bnd (pronounced "family band"), played on campus Thursday as part of Launchfest, a four-day musical festival put on by the United House of Prayer.
As people walked by Tommy Trojan and heard Fmly Bnd, Montgomery hoped they felt the sense of joy and light that he's always trying to create.
"There's so many dark things in the world," Montgomery said. "We're able to release joy and light and love and bring people to this thing where you can just be a child and laugh, dance around, and remember what it was like to be free."
