A father of three who lived in the neighborhood, 45-year-old Alfonso Cerda, was struck by the patrol vehicle around 1:30 a.m.after the police were allegedly tracking him.

According to authorities, the deputies said they were attempting to contact Cerda because they suspected he had a gun. However, Sheriff Baca announced Thursday that the police found no weapon on him.

"I'm clarifying the fact that when Mr. Cerda was detained, he had no gun and he is a citizen of the United States," said Baca. "I'm confident we'll find our what all the facts are and share them with the public."

According to family members, Cerda rode the bike around the neighborhood, fixing electric items and selling old clothes. Cerda's brother said that there will be a viewing of the body on Friday and a funeral on Sunday.

WE ALL ARE PRAYING FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY . WE WILL ALL PRAY FOR JUSTICE FOR YOUR BROTHER AND YOUR FAMILY AND ESPECIALLY FOR HIS FAMILY . MAY THE LORD KEEP YOU STRONG.

Looking at the damage to the patrol car, this appears to be more than an accident to me. That kind of damage can only be explained by a collision at very high speeds. I sincerely hope they put the officer involved on suspension, pending a full investigation by an impartial authority, i.e. NOT of that police force.

If that picture is related to the death of the cyclist this wasn't an "accident" of any shape or description. To do that much damage to a motor vehicle by hitting a cyclist would require excessive speeds for an urban environment. This shows either seriously poor judgment on the part of the deputy, or a case of murderous intent... Anyone with any sense would know hitting a cyclist with that kind of speed would result in death or permanent injury.

May my brother rest in peace. Mass is going to take place monday the 15th 11am at St. Joseph church in Hawthorne. To follow his redting place in Culver city holy cross cemetery. Please join and support us. Together we can find answers and take control over these continued abuse by these sensless acts. Alvaro Cerda
