Dick Van Dyke Accepts Lifetime Achievement Award
The Screen Actors Guild already holds a special place in Dick Van Dyke's heart, and on Tuesday the organization further expressed their affection for the actor by honoring him with a lifetime achievement award.
Van Dyke, who famously met his wife at the SAG Awards seven years ago, spoke to an open crowd at City Hall after receiving the award from Councilwoman Jan Perry.
Perry introduced the 87-year-old actor as "a man of many talents, deserving of every honor."
Van Dyke went on to discuss his achievements and philanthropic efforts, and even joked with Perry about possibly running for mayor.
He humorously ended his speech by saying, "I want to see some austerity in this administration, but don't touch my entitlements."
Upon being notified of his achievement at the SAG Awards on January 27, Van Dyke joked, "they tell me you never have to work again once you get this award. I'll have to tell them I'm available."
Van Dyke's career has showcased his incredible versatility, including his ability to sing, dance, act and hold the attention of millions of viewers.
The actor is remembered for his sitcom, "The Dick Van Dyke Show," that won him three Emmys during its run.
"The Dick Van Dyke Show was the most fun I ever had and the most creative period of my life," Van Dyke said on the red carpet.
During his decade-long career, Van Dyke explored many facets of performing arts, even musical theatre.
He was cast alongside Chita Rivera in "Bye Bye Birdie" and went on to win a Tony Award for his performance.
Van Dyke is also known for his portrayal of Bert in the movie musical "Mary Poppins" and for his solo performance of "Chim Chimeree" in the film, which became an Oscar-winning song.
"I do thank you so much, I'm so honored," Van Dyke said as he received his award.
These days when Van Dyke isn't singing with his vocal group, The Vantasix, he enjoys spending time with his wife of one year, Arlene Silver.
