Sequester Cuts Could Hit USC Students
In the face of the looming "Sequester Cut" deadline, USC students might be inclined to think they're immune from the budgetary crisis, protected as they are by attending a private university.
Yet to students with federal-funded scholarships and awards like McNair scholars Rahel Gebreyes and Luis Maldonado, the sequester's impact may be felt far more severely.
According to the McNair Scholars Program, there are 361 students receiving money, approximately 75 of whom are currently enrolled as undergraduates.
The McNair Scholars Program, a scholarship under the U.S. Department of Education Federal TRiO program, is a publicly funded program that includes core components like Summer Research Institute and the Residential Life & Cultural Program.
The scholarship could be one of many educational programs on the chopping block in the face of a brutal series of cuts referred to as the sequester along with the oft-utilized work-study program. It is as yet unclear how much these programs will suffer if the cuts go into effect.
