Trojans Upset No. 11 Arizona
For the first time in two years, USC basketball knocked off a ranked opponent.
For the first time in a lot longer, fans at Galen Center stormed the court.
USC knocked off No. 11 Arizona 89-78 on Wednesday night, led by 22 points from senior forward Eric Wise. The last time USC beat a ranked opponent, it was Arizona as well two years ago at Galen Center.
"Eric was fantastic today," said USC head coach Bob Cantu. "Every time they (made a run) at us, we responded."
After a flat performance in a blowout loss to UCLA on Sunday, the Trojans responded in a big way, handing the Wildcats just their fifth loss of the season. USC improves its record to 13-15 (8-7 in conference) with the win.
Wise shot 9-for-12 from the field, echoing the hot shooting night for the Trojans as a team. USC shot an incredible 61 percent and was 6-for-10 from three point range. Poor free throw shooting has be one of the many Achilles Heel's that has plagued the Trojans this year, but they shot 81 percent against the Wildcats.
"Tonight was our night," Cantu said. "That's how I envision the team playing."
As the clock ran down, students rushed the court, something no one can remember happening at Galen since the O.J. Mayo days.
"I have no idea they were going to (rush it)," said Wise. "It was great."
The Trojans host Arizona State on Saturday at noon in their home finale.
