USG Senate May Rethink New Security Policies
At this week's USG Senate Meeting, the Community Affairs committee went straight to business discussing their upcoming event, Explore LA. This Thursday, students will complete a tour via a virtual guidebook with many iconic “must-sees” of LA. Each participant will also receive a free Subway sandwich.
The committee will soon be releasing a survey to find out student’s ideas and opinions on what kind of shops and restaurants they hope to see constructed in the re-development of University Village.
The Senate unanimously passed a bill to the Program Board, who needed exceptional funding for the PB committees running out of money, such as: Philanthropy, Performing Arts, PSA , ACA and Concert committee. The Philanthropy committee has completely gone through their budget; Performing Arts committee needs help with the art festival and USC Crew Event; PSA needed compensation for an event speaker, and to help fund an Earth Day event and Alumni mixer; and ACA needed support for “Study Night.” The Concert committee has had previous problems with unforeseen security measures that took place in August, so PB was also awarded financial support for security purposes.
ORIENTATION REGISTRATION RESOLUTION: A resolution was put for to help new students with “undeclared” majors who have been having registration issues. They would request one-on-one academic advisement to help provide a foundation for G.E. course knowledge and set up a course-plan. The resolution will be resolved next week.
An executive of BSA, along with Senator Jasmine McAllister, presented that 68% of students oppose the new security policies because it creates an idea of elitism that becomes a target for most criminals. This percentage was based off of a questionnaire posted on Facebook and asked around the campus. One Senator suggested having an open forum to further regard the issue. This topic will be up for debate next week.
