Trojans Welcome Dunk City's Enfield
The new head coach of the USC basketball team Andy Enfield will be welcomed into the Trojan family Wednesday afternoon at the Galen Center.
Enfield, the hottest name in college basketball coaching thanks to his fifteenth seed NCAA tournament run, was hired by USC Atheltic Director Pat Haden on Monday in an effort to revive the basketball program and return it to the national stage.
"We really need to, and want to, make basketball relevant at USC," Haden said.
USC has typically been viewed as second fiddle to crosstown rival UCLA in terms of basketball success and media attention. Hiring Coach Enfield, the university is swiftly becoming the talk of the town.
"We think we've got a dynamic guy who's got a very interesting brand of basketball both offensively and defensively. It's going to be exciting and attract we believe fans and recruits," Haden said.
Enfield has acknowledged the pressure that comes along with his newly appointed position and said he looked forward to rebuilding the program into a basketball powerhouse.
"I'm looking forward to bringing an exciting, up-tempo style of play to USC and building the men's basketball brand into one the fans and basketball community will enjoy and respect."
Much of the publicity surrounding the basketball team in the last few years has been negative or at best, neutral. After two seasons marred by injuries, off-court issues, and an accumulation of losses, Haden needed to give the program a shot in the arm.
Pat Haden said via Twitter:
Spent 5 very interesting hours with Andy today! Awesome guy who has had much success in his life. Basketball will be fun at Galen! #FightOn

The last time the Trpjans made it to the big dance and created some buzz was during the 2010-2011 season, when the team earned a tournament berth as an at-large bid finishing fourth in conference play. The program also made it to the tournament in 2007, 2008, and 2009, but only advanced past the first round in the 2007 season when it lost to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in the Sweet 16.
