Arizona Tops The Women of Troy in Overtime
Despite a strong performance by USC women's soccer defender Marlee Carrillo the Women of Troy fell to the Arizona Wildcats 3-2 in overtime.
The Women of Troy were scoreless in the first half, and found themselves down early in the second. Arizona forward Kaitlyn Lopez put the Wildcats up after drilling a shot on the top left corner of the goal. Less than three minutes later forward Jazmin Ponce scored on a penalty kick.
Even though USC goalkeeper Caroline Stanley saved four goals in the game, with 12 minutes left to play USC found themselves in a 2-0 deficit.
However the Women of Troy fought their way back with two big scores by Carillo. Off forward Kayla Mills blocked kick, Carrillo chased down the loose ball hitting it into the right post of the goal. Close to the end of the half Mills set up for a free kick where Carillo knocked it in to tie the game 2-2.
In overtime the Women of Troy were hungry for the victory. Unfortunately, USC forward Mandy Freeman was called for a foul near midfield, which set up the Wildcats for a free kick. Despite USC midfielder Autumn Altamirano saving the game winning goal, the referee called another foul versus USC.
Arizona was given another chance to put the game away. This time Ponce set up for the kick and hit it toward the upper right corner out of Stanley's reach handing the Women of Troy a 3-2 loss.
The Women of Troy drop to 6-7 on the season and 1-4-1 in the Pac-12. USC will go on the road to face Colorado on Oct. 25 and Utah on October 27.
