Lamarana's Local Leader: WriteGirl

WriteGirl helps teen girls through creative writing.

"WriteGirl is a creative writing mentoring program for high school girls," said Keren Taylor, the Founder and Executive Director of WriteGirl. "We pair them with women writers so they get mentored."

WriteGirl works with more than 300 girls in the Los Angeles area. They do workshops on fiction writing, journalism, poetry and songwriting.

"In school we are taught to write academic essays," explained Tiffany Tsou, a participant. "At WriteGirl we are channeling our creative sense."

The organization is currently a finalist for the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards.

"In 12 years, we have maintained 100% track record of sending all of our girls on to college," said Taylor.

"They open the doors for me because I've always liked to write, but I hadn't really had experience writing certian generes like songwriting or script writing," said Aunye Scott-Anderson, another participant. "With WriteGirl you get to experience every aspect of literature there is."
