Students React to USG Election Results
Taking 44 percent of the vote, Andrew Menard and Rini Sampath won the 2014 USG Elections for president and vice president Tuesday night.
Candidates Logan Heley and A.J. Pinto took second, and James White and Brigid Kelly took third.
Some students expressed their displeasure with having a member of the Greek community become president-elect again.
"I'm disappointed that year after year it's a popularity contest," said USC student Lucy Ruderman. " We see people in quote unquote top Greek houses getting ushered into the student body president position."
In the past four years, all tickets have included a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, which Menard belongs to. In three out of four instances, a member of Sigma Chi has won the vote.
"A lot of houses are connected and have alliances and band together to help a candidate," said USG Senior Director of Communication Olivia Diamond.
Some students think Menard is more than his Sigma Chi affiliation.
"Andrew Menard [is] very genuine," said Lamar Gary. "I feel like people need to look at that more than his affiliation. It's only one aspect of his life, not his defining characteristic.
Menard said he is ready to take on the role.
"Today is day one," said Menard. "We get to work right away, so I'm just excited to represent the student body here at USC."
