Salvadorans in L.A. Rally for Peace in Home Country

While citizens of El Salvador are demanding a recount after the presidential elections, Salvadorans in L.A. are asking for something else.

L.A.-based Salvadorans gathered in MacArthur Park Wednesday to ask for peace and unification in El Salvador following a heated presidential election.

Preliminary counts on Monday in the Central American country showed former Marxist rebel Salvador Sanchez Ceren winning 50.11 percent of the vote, with his conservative opponent Norman Quijano capturing 49.89 percent of the vote.

The results came as a suprise to many Salvadorans. The leftist party had been favored to win by as much as 10 percentage points.

While Quijano is demanding a recount, protesters at MacArthur Park said they're not supporting any party, rather they're fighting for peace in a country that's been plagued with civil unrest.
