LAX Baggage Theft Ring Targeted in Crackdown
Police arrested six people as part of a crackdown on thefts from travelers' luggage at Los Angeles International Airport, police confirmed Thursday.
Since Wednesday night, police have served 25 search warrants at LAX and at locations in various cities across Los Angeles County.
"It's a disappointment, but a fact of life, that sometimes a few people will succumb to the temptations at LAX,'' Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said. "The actions of these few do not represent the nearly 45,000 individuals who work for the nearly 350 employers here at LAX."
Of those arrested, four allegedly received stolen property, while two were arrested on outstanding warrants, police said.
Police said those arrested were employed by airport contractors, not the airport itself. The investigation into the thefts took several months and was handled by the LAX Joint Crime Task force, comprised of LAPD detectives and Airport Police.
