Cody Kessler Named USC Starting Quarterback
USC football head coach Steve Sarkisian gave sophomore quarterback Cody Kessler the starting nod for the 2014 season following Tuesday's practice.
"He deserved it, I think he's earned it," said Sarkisian. "He's going to be a star. He's going to be a great player."
Kessler led the Trojans to a 10-4 record last season, tallying 2,968 yards and 20 touchdowns.
"I was very excited. It's another great opportunity for me," said Kessler. "I can't thank Max [Browne] and Jalen [Greene] enough for pushing me...[but] it's not over this is SC' and it's always a competition."
Kessler had been in a competition throughout spring practices for the starting position with redshirt freshman Max Browne.
"It's a decision he made and I got to respect it," said Browne. "I thought I made huge strides this spring."
USC will take the field this Saturday at the L.A. Coliseum where Kessler will make his first start at the annual Spring Game.
